I spent my teens and college years living on the Island of Puerto Rico. During one of our visits back to the island we decided to stay at the Gran Melia′ Golf Resort. It is close to one of our favorite beaches in Puerto Rico, Luquillo Beach and the rain forest, El Yunque. Please note that when traveling to Puerto Rico you do NOT need a passport because it is a Commonwealth of the United States.
The hotel is located at 200 Coco Beach Blvd, 955-I, Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, just 25 minutes from the Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport in San Juan. The resort is tucked away so you will need a rental car to get around.
Our friends who were also staying at the hotel were charged a fee for parking, however we were not. I couldn’t find any information about that on their website. If you decide to stay here I would make sure to call and ask if there is a daily parking charge.
You have a choice between Garden View or Ocean Front Suites and Ocean Front Villas. The rooms are beautifully appointed with rich Spanish decor and mahogany furnishings. There are four restaurants and three bars on site. We were out and about visiting family most of our stay but we did have an opportunity to eat at the Cafe′ Soleil for lunch and dinner. The food was delicious but expect to pay at least $20 or more per person.
The pool wraps around the center of the resort overlooking the beach and lush palm trees with “poolside Bali beds” to relax in. The beach is small with areas of coral so I recommend that you wear some kind of water shoes to protect your feet.
While you are visiting don’t forget to visit the El Yunque National Rain Forest, which is around a 40 minute drive and Luquillo Beach, which is only 19 minutes away on Highway PR 3.
We definitely plan to stay here again in the near future.
